Sorry Grandma, I think you're going to owe Aunt Cathe $20

When my aunt, grandma and I were all spending time together in Los Angeles talking about my planned trip to Europe, one of the things I was most excited about was trying the local culinary fares. I do so love food, and one of my favorite things to do when I go to a new place is try whatever food is specific to that area. And I do so love to eat.

Well, my grandma mentioned that she thought I'd probably gain weight on this trip because I'd be eating so much. My aunt countered with her thoughts that I'd lose weight because food is expensive in Europe. They made a bet for twenty dollars. At the time I also assumed I'd lose weight, not because of the expense of food or because I'd eat less but because I'd be walking and hiking and carrying a backpack for three and a half months.

Well grandma, so far it's not looking good for you. The moment I landed in Spain I looked at the sandwiches that cost €6 (which was like $9!--because the euro has been slowly devaluing it's dropped to maybe $7.50) and were tiny--I just couldn't bring myself to spend that much money. So I barely ate anything. In fact, there were the occasional day that I literally didn't eat anything at all. Add to that the fact that there are no free refills on anything ever, so I've had almost no soda--well, let's just say I've been consuming much less than normal. I do still try to splurge once at every place I go and order one thing that is specifically local (tapas in Spain, pastries in France, brats in Bavaria, and of course Greek delights--like gyros or Greek salads or anything with local feta on it--here in Greece).

I stepped on a scale in the pharmacy just yesterday and it said I was 86 kilos. Well, if my calculations are correct, that means I weigh less than 190 lbs. When I left LA, largely thanks to my grandma always taking me out to eat, I was at one of the heaviest points I've been at in my life--nearly 210 lbs. So according to that scale in the pharmacy, I've lost 20 lbs in these last three weeks. If this keeps up, I'm going to be teeny when I get back to the states. Although because food is so much cheaper here in Greece I've really been eating more and loving it. So maybe things will even out again. Plus, Italy's next, and I expect great foods from there.
