Nice, France - Munich, Germany
I don't remember exactly where I left off in my blog, and I don't have internet access right now to check (as I'm on a train and writing this for future upload), but I don't think I said much bout the three days I spent in Nice, except for my pleasantries about the hostel, so I'll probably start there.
We arrived in Nice pretty late (almost midnight) on the 26th after having shared the train ride from Barcelona with two very lovely 21 year-old Canadian girls named Chelsea and Suzanne. Having them to chat with certainly made the long train ride more fun, and it helped solidify the hostel we were going to--as I had looked at the one we ended up at but wasn't planning to go there until we talked to those girls and they had known people who raves about it (plus it was more comfortable for all four of us to find the way there together than try to split up).
So that was Monday. Tuesday morning Jessica and I got up pretty early, ate the complimentary breakfast, and were off to go find the Matisse Museum (which is free). When we got there we were disappointed because it turns our all the museums except the modern art museum is closed on Tuesdays :(
But we weren't about to let that get us down! Right next to the Matisse Museum were some ancient Roman ruins--which were actually undergoing some kind of renovation--so we were able to look around a bit at that which was pretty cool, but all the fences and scaffolds didn't make for very good pictures--though I did get this one
After poking around there for a bit we took the bus through the heart of old Nice and went directly to the shore. The green-blue Mediterranean water with the stark contrast of the white-washed rock beach was stunning. Jessica wanted to lay in the sun and read for a bit while I wanted to explore more of the city, so we parted ways here.
I walked down the beachfront promenade to the area's most lavish hotel (cheapest rooms €460), the Hotel Negresso. Inside the book said there's a bit of a museum, but sad for me the whole hotel was closed for renovation through the end of June. I wasn't having a whole lot of luck on the museum front that day. But I continued my walk along the promenade, sat for a bit in a beautiful shady park (named for Charles I), then continued my trek to Castle Hill. This hill is the only really high spot in a generally flat area, however there's no castle up on it anymore. There are, however, bits an pieces of what were once castle, as well as a beautiful man-made waterfall, a couple nice cafe's, and a great place to take pictures of the view. There's also an elevator that will take you up it (so you don't have to climb the more than 300 stairs) if you're willing to pay the euros (which I wasn't). Also about half way up I found a beautiful Jewish cemetary.
Once I reached the top and thought I'd start back down I thought I'd stop first for a snack at the cafe. I ordered a nutella crepe. My god was that delicious (and huge!).
I seriously don't know how the French are so thin and beautiful when they eat so many carbs and pastries. I almost never see any protein for sale (except cheese), and everyone's always munching on a baguette. But I digress...
Once I got back to the hostel from my trek around the town I was beat and pretty much just took a shower and went to bed. I think I went down to the hostel bar for a €1 glass of delicious house white wine, but I didn't stay long and went to bed early.
I'll post about Wednesday's adventures Next
